NAME: Ren Amamiya
CANON: Persona 5 Royal
CANON POINT: Post Persona 5 Royal True Ending (Not Strikers/Tactica compliant)
BACKGROUND: Link here!
SUITABILITY: I think Ren would be a great character for this game, because he is, at his core, someone who wants to help people. Sure, he'd be confused initially, but after the Metaverse, I feel he'd also fairly quickly get used to his situation, and step up to do what needs to be done. Since he's also somewhat reckless and dramatic, I feel that may make for creating interesting situations. He's also a curious guy; he'd find all of this very interesting and want to find out more. In the end, he'd want to go home, and look for a way to go home, but he wouldn't want to leave the pokemon here to their fate either, which may create an interesting conflict. As for having to make choices that go against his morality... Ren's got strong morals and a strong will of rebellion, so if he feels things aren't going fairly, he'll definitely figure out a way to go against that. First thing my guy did upon arriving in a new school ON PROBATION was confronting an abusive teacher. He's willing to make difficult choices if there really is no other option, but he's always going to try looking for a way that brings the least amount of harm... even at his own detriment.

On a personal level, I'm also just interested in whatever CR I'm able to get with Ren, be that positive or negative. I like seeing how he gets along with certain people, and how that influences his actions.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character is on an exploration quest when they find an injured Pokemon in need of help. This Pokemon appears to be in distress and is quite dangerous, posing a risk to your character even if they mean well, and putting your quest mission at risk. What do they do? What are some possibilities of how they work with teammates to address this, or do they go at it alone?

First of all, he's going to want to help the injured Pokemon. As for how, he's going to confide in his current team, see what abilities are at their disposal, and try to form a plan to rescue the injured Pokemon. For example, if one of his teammates has a sleep inducing move, like hypnosis, he may suggest they use it to calm down the Pokemon in need of help. Once he's figured out that his fur produces an aroma that calms down Pokemon, he'd also be willing to use that. Worse comes to worse, he's more than willing to put himself in harm's way to give his teammates an opening to help. Even if it means getting his ass beat by a rampaging Charizard so his team can go find someone better suited to deal with this.

The quest... depends on what it is, I guess. Can it wait? Is it time sensitive? These factors would also influence his decisions. If it's time sensitive, he's not going to spend as much time thinking of The Best Strategy Possible and just jump in recklessly. He wouldn't want to do anything to bring the quest in danger, but he keenly feels that offering help is key.

Your character's worst enemy has recently appeared in game, and has joined the guild your character is part of. They both want to tackle the same quest, and your character's enemy suggests that they work together as a team to accomplish this goal. How does your character respond to this?

Okay, so, Shido. The thing about Ren is that he wants to believe in the inherent good of humanity, even if his time in the Metaverse has shown him the contrary many times. While the changes of heart* are meant to force someone to confess to their crimes, if he (and the Phantom Thieves as a whole) don't NEED to change someone's heart to help them, they won't. If there are victims involved, they will act, however. Also, just because someone's heart has been changed, doesn't mean Ren's gonna like or even trust them very much. It all depends on their own willingness to change, and a forceful change of heart is pretty much... not that. Shido's heart had to be forcefully changed, and he even tried to temporarily kill himself JUST so the change of heart wouldn't go through.

Ren's not gonna be happy about it; this is the asshole who got him sent on probation for no reason other than that Shido had the money and power to do so, AND take over all of Japan in a fascist regime, but I do think in the end he'd at least go along on the mission. The thing is... Shido doesn't even really remember who Ren is, not until the end, and his heart gets changed pretty much immediately after. So! With that in mind, it depends on if this is Shido before or after his change of heart. Before? Suspicious as hell. Ren's coming along, but he's bringing another Pokemon he trusts and has a backup plan in case things go south, just to make sure there's nothing seedy going on. After? He's not going to be very comfortable with it, but he'd be willing to give it a chance. Same precautions apply, though.

tldr I guess: he's not happy but he'll do it for the sake of the mission.

*Change of heart: a way of forcing someone to see the truth behind their actions, rather than whatever excuses they make for themselves. IE: A teacher has been abusing students, justifying it to himself that he's a former olympic medalist, and he deserves recognition, and everyone should listen to him and do as he says. This has been reinforced by most people around him, and they tend to turn a blind eye because his status as a former medalist means they have a higher reputation than they should have. When his heart is changed in the Metaverse, he will realize that what he's been doing is wrong, and all the guilt he should've been feeling for harming others will crash into him at once, forcing him to confess his crimes.

The leader of your character's guild has just approached your character with an offer: they will provide your character with extra supplies, reputation points, and help them with any of their current struggles. In exchange, they ask for your character to do a favor for them that may harm the other guilds, and will not specify what the favor is in advance. It sounds shady, but it's the deal of a lifetime in your character's path to get back home, and refusing it may cause strife for your character within their current guild. What do they think of this offer? What do they ultimately decide to do?

Ren wouldn't feel comfortable with an offer like this at all. He's been offered quite a few shady deals in his life (Yaldabaoth, Shido, and Maruki), and he's refused every single one of them, even if they did seem more beneficial to him personally. As such, he wouldn't accept the offer, even if it would cause damage to himself and his reputation. He's no stranger to losing reputation for the sake of making sure no further harm is caused, and holding on to his own morals. To put it into perspective; with Maruki's deal (mentioned above), he was basically choosing Akechi's life vs the fate of the world. He was sorely tempted to take the deal, and even if it meant everyone being brainwashed forever, at least nobody would feel pain anymore and Akechi would live, right? But... that went completely against his own morals AND Akechi's wishes, so in the end, even if it meant more hurt personally, he chose not to take the deal, and fight Maruki for the sake of the world.

Due to shortages on supplies, the city is facing issues deciding where to cut corners during this rough time. Somehow, the responsibility has fallen on your character's shoulders, and they have to make a decision. If they send out an extra team of Pokemon, they will be able to gather more food, and through that, save the lives of dozens of starving Pokemon that were in dire need of nutrition. However, the only Pokemon available to scout for food are those working at the pokeclinic, and sending them out would mean certain death for at least two ill patients. What does your character decide to do? How do they feel about this choice, and how would they deal with the pushback that comes from either side?

First of all, Ren would try to keep a brave face on for everyone. I also think this is exactly the kind of thing where he wouldn't want to make a choice, and try to find all the food necessary by himself, even at his own detriment. Guy would genuinly work day and night gathering food just to make sure nobody dies, only to end up on death's door himself. But at least he managed to minimize the amount of suffering for everyone else. He has done similar things before: allowing himself to get captured by the police so his friends could escape, take a horrible beating, getting drugged, and risking death if even the slightest thing about their plan went wrong, or the wrong people didn't listen to him. It turned out fine, in the end, and while his friends weren't totally safe, Ren clearly got the short end of the stick here. He did so willingly to make sure nobody BUT HIM got hurt, or implicated in the crimes he was being arrested/framed for.

In the case that he literally CANNOT do this (though you'd have to have a good reason why he shouldn't even try), he'd take the least amount of Pokemon possible from the clinic to look for food. He'd feel extremely guilty about the whole ordeal, though, and likely feel/take personal responsibility for the Pokemon that end up dying as a result. He likely wouldn't argue too much with the people opposed to his decision; he KNOWS he's doing a shitty thing, but it was this or the other equally shitty thing, and this way, hopefully more Pokemon can make it through in the end. Again, even if it hurts, he tries to see which option would bring the least amount of pain and devastation (to others) as a whole.

POKEMON: Sprigatito. I feel Sprigatito would be a good choice for Ren for multiple reasons; one, he's a Phantom Thief, and they're very cat burglar-y in that they infiltrate Palacas, usually by climbing up to windows or finding other secret entrances. Either way, he's going to be doing many acrobatic and trickster-y feats that fit perfectly with a cat pokemon. Ah, but why not any other cat pokemon, you may ask? Because I feel that the Sprigatito line and their jester/performer aesthetic fit him, and especially his Joker aesthetic very well. Also, their hidden ability, Protean, mirrors his ability as a Wild Card in his home universe rather well. Tldr; he can change his Persona, and thus, his type affinities, during his turn. Protean changes the Pokemon's type to the type of move they're using, which I feel is very similar.
GUILD OPT-OUT: No Cheri Berries. He'd call out Ribombee and start a revolution lol.

Personally, I think he'd be the best fit with the Oran Berries. Sure, you could argue that he's sharp enough to fit in with the Lum Berries, and while I think he wouldn't be unable to function within them, the general attitude of Polteageist and the guild's values just wouldn't mesh well with him. The Oran Berries, however, align much more with his personal morals, and his personality as a whole. He's not the type to turn people away, regardless of personal history. The whole guild being known for hosting rejects aligns pretty well with Ren himself and his own friends, the Phantom Thieves, at home, who were all societal rejects for one reason or another. He believes everyone has their own value in the world, and that everyone deserves a chance.
